Objective: To provide a written procedure for the safe operation of forklifts in the Warehouse.
Scope: This SOP shall be applicable for Warehouse and Engineering Department.

Responsibility
1. Warehouse personnel shall be responsible to carry out the activity as per procedure.
2. Warehouse In Charge or his or her nominee shall be accountable to ensure the proper training and implementation of the procedure.

Precautions
6.1 Forklift shall be driven carefully with controlled speed.
6.2 During operation by the operator no one shall be allowed to get on the vehicle.
6.3 While driving forklift, safe distance shall be maintained from fellow colleagues and others.
6.4 Keys shall not be left in vehicle, under any circumstances.
6.5 Proper and neat clothing shall always be worn by the operator for easy and safe operation.
6.6 Sufficient distance from the power lines shall be maintained during operation.
6.7 If any unusual noise is heard or anything unusual sensed, then the vehicle shall be inspected and repaired immediately.
6.8 Overloading or uneven loading shall be avoided.
6.9 The fork shall be kept at 15 to 20 cm above the ground when traveling.
6.10 While working, reckless operation shall be avoided.
6.11 During charging, open flames shall be avoided.
6.12 Recommended lubricants shall only be used.
Procedure
7.1 DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT

7.2 FORKLIFT OPERATION
The forklift shall be operated as follows:
7.2.1 Switch on the forklift by pressing the key. Green light is emitted.
7.2.2 Position the vehicle after pressing appropriate gear.
7.2.3 Then turn the steering wheel to move the vehicle.
7.2.4 Use the three levers as required.
Lever 1 – for up and down the fork
Lever 2 – for forwarding and back warding the fork position
Lever 3 – after forwarding to change the fork position.
7.2.5 After completion of loading and unloading, again position the vehicle by pressing the gear. The gear should be in neutral position.
7.2.6 Then switch off the vehicle.
7.3 PRE-OPERATION CHECK
7.3.1 To ensure safety the following pre-operation check shall be performed before beginning work.
7.3.2 Inspection of Vehicle Position and Uprightness
7.3.3 Inspection of Tire
7.3.4 Inspection of Dash Board Battery Charge Indication Lamp
7.3.5 Inspection of Hydraulic Oil Level and Refill if Required
7.3.6 Inspection of Parking Brake and Hydraulic level of Hydraulic Brake, Refill if Required
7.3.7 Inspection of Brake Pad Gap and Brake Pedal Height
7.3.8 Inspection of Steering Wheel Freeness, after Starting
7.3.9 Inspection of Horn
7.3.10 Inspection of Load Handling System
7.3.11 Inspection of Battery Electrolyte Level and Refill if Required
7.3.12 Inspection of Charger
7.3.13 Inspection of Functioning of Dash Board Instrument
7.3.14 Inspection of Motor and its Body Clean Condition
7.3.15 Inspection of Hydraulic Hose Condition, Replace if any Leakage
7.3.16 The different checks shall be performed according to “OPERATOR’S MANUAL”.
7.4 POST-OPERATION CHECK
7.4.1 The forklift shall be cleaned after operation, by wiping off with a clean cloth.
7.4.2 The following checks shall be performed:
Inspect for oil or Battery Electrolyte Leakage.
Inspect each component for scratches, dents or cracks.
Inspect lubrication of each moving component.
7.5 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING
7.5.1 For routine maintenance, Engineering Department shall be contacted.
7.5.2 If any problem arises during operation, Engineering Department shall be informed immediately.
7.5.3 A log-book shall be maintained for routine maintenance and repair.
