Objective To describe the procedure for operation and maintenance of fire fighting equipment so that the same can be used effectively whenever required.
Scope This procedure is applicable for operation and maintenance of all fire fighting equipment installed at different location in (Company Name).
Responsibility
1. Head of EHS/HR department shall be responsible for maintenance/refilling of fire fighting equipment.
2. Representative of EHS/HR department shall be responsible for periodic inspection of fire fighting equipment.
3. Head of EHS/HR shall be responsible to train and update group of employees in use of fire fighting equipment
Precautions
=>> Take necessary steps before using fire fighting equipments.
6.0 PROCEDURE
=>> Maintenance of Fire Fighting Equipment
=>> Install right type of fire fighting equipment at various positions in the factory premises depending upon the nature of fire that may occur in that area.
=>> EHS representative shall prepare list of fire fighting equipment, Type/Class, use & location in Annexure – I.
=>> Train the personnel for handling of various types of fire fighting equipment.
=>> Clean this fire fighting equipment weekly with damp mop.
=>> Instructions written on fire fighting equipment should be clearly legible.
=>> Department personnel should be well versed with the operating instruction about fire fighting equipment in their areas.
=>> Get the fire extinguisher serviced and checked every two-year by competent person and affix the service sticker with due details to the fire extinguisher.
=>> Check the fire extinguisher monthly for any damage, corrosion, leakage, damaged gaskets etc. as well as for nozzles, hoses etc. and record in Annexure – II.
=>> Check the level of contents wherever possible with the help of indicator. When indicator shifts on red side or on the due date of refilling, refill the extinguisher.
=>> Always keep ready sand and water bucket painted in red, and filled with sand and water. These should be labeled as ‘Fire ’.
=>> Operation of Dry Powder (ABC) Type of Fire Extinguisher
=>> Fire extinguisher of class dry powder is suitable for use on wood, paper, fuel oil, LPG, natural gas and electrical fires.
=>> Remove the fire extinguisher from its holder and place on the floor.
=>> Remove the safety pin provided at the top and stand at safe distance from the fire.
=>> Lift the extinguisher, press the control lever and at the same time aim the nozzle at the base of the fire from the wind side in a rapid sweeping motion.
=>> Operation of Carbon Dioxide Type of Fire Extinguisher
=>> Carbon dioxide (CO2) is class of fire extinguisher is suitable for use on oil, petroleum and electrical fires.
=>> Remove the fire extinguisher from its holder and place on the floor.
=>> Remove the safety pin provided at the top and stand at safe distance from the fire
=>> Hold the discharge tube in one hand and direct it at the base of the fire.
=>> Operation of Foam Extinguisher
=>> Foam extinguisher is suitable for use on wood, paper, cloth, fuel oil, Natural gases.
=>> Remove the fire extinguisher from its holder and place on the floor.
=>> Remove the safety pin provided at the top and stand at safe distance from the fire.
=>> Lift the extinguisher, press the control lever and at the same time aim the nozzle at the base of the fire from the wind side in a rapid sweeping motion.
=>> Operation of Sand and Water Bucket
=>> Hold the bucket carrier by right hand and bucket handle by left hand.
=>> Stand at safe distance from the fire.
=>> Throw sand / water into the fire.
=>> Repeat the steps until the fire goes out completely.
=>> Operation of Fire Hose (Fire Hydrant System)
=>> Follow the procedure for maintenance of fire hydrant system. (SOP No.: EG071)
=>> All fire extinguishers shall be refilled from contracted external agency once in two year or as when required.
