1.0 OBJECTIVE : To set up a standardized general procedure for the operation of Vortex Mixer used in the microbiology laboratory for the homogeneous mixing of suspension.
2.0 SCOPE : This SOP is applicable for the Vortex Mixer: Model No.: M37610-33.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 Each individual in the laboratory is responsible for carrying out the procedure.
3.2 Overall responsibility for training, implementation & follow-up with the QC Manager or his nominee.

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Operation
5.1.1 Connect the instrument to the main power supply.
5.1.2 Reduce the speed controller to the minimum before switching ON the instrument.
5.1.3 Turn ON the instrument by moving the ON/ OFF switch. The power switch is a combination ON/ OFF and mode switch to enable “TOUCH” or “FULL” operation.
5.1.4 Move the power switch to either the “FULL” position or the “TOUCH” position as per requirements. In the “FULL” position the mixing head will begin oscillating automatically. In the “TOUCH” position the mixing head will oscillate when it is depressed.
5.1.5 Slowly increase the speed to desired level by moving the speed controller knob.
5.1.6 Hold the flask or test tubes containing liquid that is to be mixed on the mixing head of the instrument.
5.1.7 After completion of mixing turn the instrument off by moving the switch to the OFF position and disconnect from the main power connection.
5.2 Changing of Mixing Head
5.2.1 To change the mixing surface to mixing cup or vice-versa, first ensure that the instrument is disconnected from the main power connection.
5.2.2 Peel off mixing surface disc, while holding the mixing platform to keep from turning, unscrew the mixing platform and remove it.
5.2.3 Install the single cup mixing head with the hold down screw, while holding the rubber mixing cup to keep from turning.
5.3 Cleaning
5.3.1 If any spillage occur immediately power OFF the instrument and wipe out the spillage with dry cloth or dam cloth moistened with disinfectant solution.
