SOP for Operation and cleaning of Forklift

1.0 OBJECTIVE
To describe the procedure for operation and cleaning of Forklift.

2.0 SCOPE
This procedure is applicable for operation and cleaning of Forklift used in warehouse.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 Operator to follow the laid down procedure.
3.2 Warehouse officer shall be responsible for supervision, control and appropriate training to operator.
3.3 Warehouse in-charge shall be overall responsible for effective implementation of procedure.

4.0 ACCOUNTABILITY
4.1 Manager, Warehouse

5.0 PRECAUTIONS
5.1 Ensure that the wheels are not damaged and the hydraulic system is functioning properly.
5.2 If any problem arises during operation, Engineering Department shall be informed immediately.
5.3 Ensure that the batteries of Forklift are properly charged and are in operating condition. Also the battery cell filter caps are dry and clean. Battery plug is properly connected.
5.4 Before driving ensure that the service brakes, horn, steering are in operating condition and the emergency switch off is not pressed in.
5.5 Ensure that operator hand and shoes are dry and wear safety helmet before driving.
5.6 Ensure the weight of the load and speed of the forklift should be within the forklift permitted lifting capacity (1000 kg) and speed (max. 5 km/hour).
5.7 Make sure the route is clear of obstructions. Watch for water, oil, or other liquids on the floor. Be aware of other people and hand pallet trolley in or near work area.
5.8 Never allow passenger on the forklift and never carry defective or damaged pallets during operation.
5.9 Ensure that the Forklift is properly switched “OFF” after completion the job.

6.0 PROCEDURE
6.1 Pre-Operation Check
6.1.1 Inspection of Vehicle Position and Uprightness
6.1.2 Inspection of Tire
6.1.3 Inspection of Dash Board Battery Charge Indication Lamp
6.1.4 Inspection of Hydraulic Oil Level and Refill if Required
6.1.5 Inspection of Parking Brake and Hydraulic level of Hydraulic Brake, Refill if Required
6.1.6 Inspection of Steering Wheel Freeness, after Starting
6.1.7 Inspection of Horn
6.1.8 Inspection of Load Handling System
6.1.9 Inspection of Battery Electrolyte Level and Refill if Required
6.1.10 Inspection of Charger
6.1.11 Inspection of Functioning of Dash Board Instrument
6.1.12 Inspection of Motor and its Body Clean Condition
6.1.13 Inspection of Hydraulic Hose Condition, Replace if any Leakage
6.1.14 The different checks shall be performed and recorded in Pre-Operation and Post Operation Check of Forklift (FRM No.: FWH/044-00).
6.2 Operation of forklift
6.2.1 Enter your Pin code using the keys on the keypad and the I key. The display lights.
6.2.2 Position the vehicle after pressing appropriate gear.
6.2.3 Then turn the steering wheel to move the vehicle and start gently by accelerating slowly until you reach the desire speed.
6.2.4 Use the three levers as required.
Lever 1 – for up and down the fork
Lever 2- for forwarding and back warding the fork position
Lever 3- after forwarding to change the fork position.

6.2.5 Control the speed by pressing the brake pedal to the required position.
6.2.6 After completion of operation keep the forklift to its desired place and press the O key on the keypad for switched “OFF”.
6.2.7 When the forklift is out of order disconnect the battery plugs, label the stacker as “Under Maintenance” and inform to engineering dept. through repair request (FRM No.:FEG/037).
6.3 Post-Operation Check
6.3.1 Inspection of oil or Battery Electrolyte Leakage.
6.3.2 Inspection of each component for scratches, dents or cracks.
6.3.3 Inspection of lubrication for each moving component.
6.4 Cleaning of forklift
6.4.1 Operator shall clean the forklift exterior parts such as Handle, Battery box and fork so as to remove the accumulated dust on it with dry clean cloth before starting of daily operation.
6.5 Maintenance of forklift
6.5.1 Engineer personnel shall be responsible to follow the cleaning and maintenance procedure strictly as per SOP EG140.
6.5.2 A log-book shall be maintained by engineering personnel for routine maintenance and repair.
