Objective: To provide a procedure and guidelines for handling and use of various gases by laboratory personnel for analysis on instrument like Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and Gas chromatograph used in Quality control department.
Scope: This procedure is applicable for handling of various gases used in Quality Control Department of (Company Name).
Responsibility:
=>> QC Analyst/ Officer shall be responsible to perform the activity as per procedure.
=>> Sr. Officer / Designee shall be responsible to ensure proper and timely execution of the procedure.
=>> Manager QC or his/her nominee shall be responsible for effective implementation and training of the procedure.
Precautions:
=>> Do not use oils, greases on pressure regulator, gauges and other fittings.
=>> Never roll or throw gas cylinders. Use chain to keep them from toppling.
=>> Label empty cylinder with a conspicuous label and separate from full ones.
=>> Always use reducing valve to discharge gases. Always close the cylinder valve after use and open delivery valve to relieve pressure on entire delivery system.
=>> To stop foreign substances entering into the cylinder, never discharge the cylinder to a pressure of less than 2 bars.
Procedure:
=>> Procurement and storages
=>>>All gases should be procured only from authorized dealer.
=>>>QC Analyst / Officer shall physically verify and cross check the gas cylinders received against delivery challan.
=>>>Any discrepancy shall be reported to the Manager QC.
=>>>QC Analyst / Officer shall send the delivery challan to the Manager QC for approval.
=>>>Store the gas cylinders in respective area designated by contents of cylinder.
=>> Replacement of cylinder/ Installation of cylinder
=>>>Ensure that needle valve of empty cylinder is closed.
=>>>Engineering department is responsible for replacement of empty cylinder /installation of a filled cylinder according to QC request.
=>>>Place the empty cylinder in the designated area.
=>>>Ensure proper installation and labeling of cylinders.
=>> Opening and closing for usage of gas cylinder
=>>>For opening the cylinder, loose the needle valve of the gas cylinder in clock-wise direction for all the cylinders except hydrogen for which it is anti-clockwise.
=>>>Rotate the delivery valve of gas station slowly in clockwise direction (anti-clockwise direction for hydrogen) till desired pressure is achieved.
=>>>After completion of work, tight the needle valves properly. Rotate the regulator valve slowly in anti-clockwise direction (clockwise direction for hydrogen).
=>>>Keep the record of gas consumption as per Annexure-I.
=>>>Check the quantity of gas present in gas cylinder by monitoring pressure regulator. Based on physical stock / consumption, QC Officer shall raise the requisition for next cylinder, and submit it to the Manager QC for verification and approval.
=>>>After approval, QC Officer shall forwards the same to purchase department for procurement of gas cylinder.
