Responsibilities of a biomedical scientist

A biomedical scientist’s primary focus is the biology of human health and disease and ranges from the analysis of biomedical science and human biology. It is underpinned by relevant basic sciences including anatomy and physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and molecular biology, immunology, mathematics and statistics.

As a biomedical scientist, you will perform many tests on samples taken by doctors and nurses. It will be used to diagnose various diseases and ailments.

Responsibilities of a biomedical scientist:

1. Performing routine and specialist testing on a range of samples

2. Passing on test results to hospital staff, who use the information to diagnose and treat illnesses

3. Processing patient samples in good time and make sure that turnaround times for reporting results are achieved

4. Maintaining and running specialist lab equipment

5. Maintaining and ordering stocks of materials

6. Answering telephone enquiries about test results and other general lab issues

7. Accurately recording data onto the laboratory’s computer system

8. Supporting the lab’s quality management system and observe all relevant health and safety regulations

9. Supervising and supporting trainee biomedical scientists and other support staff, along with supporting the quality manager to make sure health and safety regulations are adhered to

10. Keeping your professional knowledge up to date and take responsibility for your continuing professional development (CPD)
