Pharmaceutical Products

Pharmaceutical product means any product that cannot be dispensed under the law without following a prescription order written by a licensed medical professional and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy. Pharmaceutical products – also known as drugs or medicines – are specialized preparations used in modern and traditional medicine. They are essential for the prevention and treatment of disease and the protection of public health.

Use of ineffective, low-quality, harmful drugs can lead to therapeutic failure, disease exacerbations, drug resistance, and sometimes death. It also undermines the confidence of health systems, health professionals, pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors.

Ensuring regular access to good quality, safe and affordable medicines is still a challenge for many countries. The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean provides relevant expertise and technical assistance to Member States in the region in the areas of quality assurance, regulations and legislation, drug safety and efficacy.

Pharmaceutical product refers to any substance resulting from the preparation, preservation or combination of drugs, vitamins or other ingredients used to improve personal health. Cannabis products, including cannabis products for external use, are not pharmaceutical products.
