Different types of lubricants used in tablet

In tablet formulation, various lubricants are used to improve flow of active ingredients and prevent clogging. Lubricants can be classified according to their intended use.

Wetting agents are used to moisten dry ingredients and mix them together. They help release the active ingredient from the tablet. Common wetting agents used in tablet formulation include water, propylene glycol, sorbitol, and glycerin.

Stabilizers are used to prevent tablets from breaking or disintegrating during manufacture and storage. Common stabilizers used in tablet formulation include cellulose derivatives (eg, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), fatty acids (eg, stearic acid), and sodium benzoate.

Viscosity modifiers are used to control the viscosity of tablets so that they flow smoothly through a machine and do not interact with other components. Common viscosity modifiers used in tablet formulation include sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, guar gum, and xanthan gum.

Lubricants are also used to enhance the taste of tablets. These lubricants can be classified according to their intended use.

To dissolve tablets, disintegrants are used. Disintegrants break into smaller pieces so that the active ingredients are released from the tablet and absorbed by the body. Common excipients used in tablet formulation include calcium carbonate, croscarmellose sodium, alginic acid and magnesium stearate.

Lubricants are an important component of the tableting process, as they help prevent caking and increase flowability. Without lubricants, the tablets will be difficult to manufacture and may not meet the required properties. Different types of lubricants are available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The type of lubricant used will depend on the specific application and desired results.
